Oswego District AGL article March 2011

Masonic Symbols & Floorwork

Brothers & Friends: March is here and all of the lodges will be getting back in the swing of things. Spring is just around the corner and hopefully most of the snow that buried our beloved Oswego District will have melted to the point that we can at least see our way clear at the intersections.

Freemasonry is said to be a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols. Symbolism is at the core of the ritual and Norm and I have been working on a program that we hope will help each of you to better understand all those symbols and emblems found in the allegory of the 3rd degree.

The Standard Work in New York has been burnished to the point that every phrase and reference holds specific symbolic meaning . We hope to that by bringing this program to you in the lodges we can help each of you to understand the powerful ideas that the symbols are intended to convey.

Secondly, floor work is near and dear to the Grand Lecturer's heart and I feel that by and large our district does a good job. However, we also have many new brothers and it is important that they not pick up bad habits. To that end Norm and I will also be presenting some tips and pointing out some of the more common errors we see. We would appreciate it if you could find a night on your busy trestleboards to fit us in. Each Master and Secretary in the district should have received a letter by the time you read this outlining our plans. We hope to see as many of you as possible over the next few months.
